Will Parliament Get a Say?

In a recent interview, SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf expressed reservations about the introduction of compulsory elements in the new draft of the Wehrdienstgesetz, a proposed law regulating military service in Germany. According to Klüssendorf, the Bundestag must carefully consider the implications of such a move, as it could lead to an automatic adoption of compulsory measures.

Initially, the focus should be on attracting young people to the Bundeswehr through voluntary means, as outlined in the coalition agreement. “It’s about taking measures to make service in the Bundeswehr so attractive that many young people will decide to join. This requires time and all possible options must be explored” Klüssendorf emphasized.

If voluntary recruitment does not yield the desired results, the government can then consider alternative measures. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, also from the SPD, has already announced plans to include a provision for mandatory service in the new draft of the Wehrdienstgesetz.
