Will New Government Form in Time?

A German city and municipal association has called on the democratic parties to form a new government quickly after the federal election. The association’s chief executive, André Berghegger, told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that Germany needs a stable and capable government in the face of significant internal and external challenges.

Following the election campaign, the democratic parties should come together in the spirit of the country, Berghegger added. “There should be no time wasted in lengthy exploratory and coalition negotiations.”

Cities and municipalities, he said, are facing unprecedented challenges. The financial deficit of the cities and municipalities has grown to 25 billion euros by the end of the third quarter of 2024 and the investment backlog has continued to rise to 186 billion euros. Both businesses and citizens rely on functional municipalities, the association’s representative argued.

The parties should quickly agree on key points and establish reliable framework conditions, Berghegger said. This is also necessary in the context of external developments, such as the situation in Ukraine. “Europe must still be able to count on Germany as the strongest economic nation” Berghegger demanded.
