In a decisive move, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at its party convention in Berlin on Monday adopted its “Immediate Program” which, in the event of a victory in the federal election, will be implemented without delay. In the open vote on Monday afternoon, all delegates agreed.

The focus of the program lies on economic issues, with nine of the 15 individual points revolving around this complex. Measures to reduce the electricity tax and network charges, lower the value-added tax on food in restaurants and halve the number of government-appointed officials are among the key points. The CDU also plans to abolish the heating law of the government coalition and reintroduce the agricultural diesel refund.

The second area of the “Immediate Program” deals with migration and security issues. The CDU promises to introduce the storage of IP addresses to combat child sexual abuse, implement electronic ankle bracelets for violent offenders against women and repeal the cannabis law.

The five-point plan of party leader Friedrich Merz to combat illegal migration and the so-called “Zustrombegrenzungsgesetz” (stream control law) are also included in the “Immediate Program.” Both proposals had caused a stir in the previous week, as the CDU had, in a Bundestag vote, accepted a majority together with the AfD.
