West Germans Get Bigger Volunteer Pay

A significant disparity in compensation for Bundesfreiwilligendienst (BFD) participants – a German federal volunteer service program – has emerged between West and East Germany, sparking political criticism and calls for increased funding. Recent responses to a parliamentary inquiry by the Left party, as reported by the “Rheinische Post”, reveal that volunteers in West Germany receive an average monthly allowance of approximately €358, compared to just over €300 in the East.

This discrepancy has drawn sharp condemnation from Left party parliamentarian Mandy Eißing, who warned against the potential for the program to be exploited for wage suppression. “Engagement is vital and valuable, but it must not become a gateway for wage dumping” Eißing stated. “Volunteer services need to be fair, equitable and genuinely voluntary.

The imbalance throws a spotlight on enduring regional economic inequalities within Germany, raising questions about the program’s accessibility and the true extent to which it adheres to its ethos of voluntary service. Critics argue that the lower allowance in the East may inadvertently discourage participation from individuals with limited financial resources, undermining the program’s inclusivity.

Furthermore, Eißing leveled criticism at Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU), accusing her of downplaying the need for increased financial support. Prien’s commitment to securing funding for the BFD appears inconsistent with announced expansion plans. While the government touts the creation of 5,000 new positions, funding for the program is projected to remain below 2024 levels even in 2026, a move Eißing characterized as “window dressing”. The shortfall raises concerns that the program’s quality and the wellbeing of its participants may be compromised, ultimately jeopardizing the long-term sustainability of the BFD. The debate underscores the political pressure to address regional disparities and ensure adequate support for civic engagement initiatives within Germany.
