'We're on the Brink of a Disaster!'

The Chair of the European Parliament’s Defence Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann of the FDP, is calling for a faster expansion of military mobility in Germany. The country must pick up the pace and strengthen the infrastructure accordingly, she told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”.

“It must be the case that military requirements can be implemented immediately in an emergency” the FDP politician demanded. This should be practiced and financially supported accordingly. She criticized the need to submit a 45-day advance request for troop relocation in some cases, or the inability to move tanks due to the maximum weight limit in the road traffic regulations.

“It is almost absurd and reckless to orient oneself by the road traffic regulations in the event of an attack or to request a 45-day advance notice – utterly unrealistic” Strack-Zimmermann said. “Who genuinely believes they can apply civilian measures in a crisis is, in the truest sense of the word, deaf to the sound of the alarm.
