In the 18th matchday of the German Bundesliga, Werder Bremen suffered a 0-2 defeat at home against FC Augsburg.
The Hanseatic team fell behind as early as the 5th minute, when Friedl’s cross from the right flank found the net in the bottom left corner. Bremen pushed hard to equalize, but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Stage’s free-kick attempt in the 44th minute narrowly missed the target, and it was Essende who took advantage of the Werder defense’s lapses to score the second goal, capitalizing on a Giannoulis chip in the dying minutes of the first half.
The home team continued to show more initiative in the second half, with Grüll’s shot in the 55th minute hitting the post and Dahmen making a crucial save on Ducksch’s follow-up. Augsburg, meanwhile, nearly added a third goal through Essende’s cross in the 59th minute, which Jung cleared off the line.
Bremen’s best chances came from set pieces, but the opposition’s defense held firm. The away team, on the other hand, looked more comfortable in their lead, and the score remained unchanged.
The defeat leaves Werder Bremen in 9th place, while Augsburg moves up to 12th in the league table.
