Weidel's Ukraine Ultimatum

German politician Alice Weidel, a candidate for the AfD, has expressed opposition to the deployment of the German military as part of a potential peacekeeping force in Ukraine. “Under an AfD-involvement government, Germany will not send German soldiers to Ukraine” she told the Bild newspaper. “We must not put ourselves in the danger of being drawn into the war between Russia and Ukraine in the event of a renewed escalation.”

Weidel also criticized the state of the German military, stating that it is in a “desolate condition”. “Even with the ‘Zeitenwende’ declared in February 2022, the necessary measures by the government coalition for the rebuilding of the German military did not follow” she said.

Instead of military engagement, Germany should act as a mediator to secure a “lasting peace” in Ukraine, Weidel suggested. She also noted that it is foreseeable that Russia may find it difficult to accept NATO troops as a guarantee of peace in Ukraine and that a review of this issue could be considered in the future, possibly under a UN mandate, involving all parties concerned.
