A German far-right party’s federal parliamentary faction has re-elected Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla as its co-chairs at a constitutive meeting. The faction announced this on Tuesday morning.
Both have been leading the faction’s dual leadership since 2021, with Alice Weidel previously co-leading the faction with Alexander Gauland from 2017 to 2021. The AfD has doubled its result since the 2021 federal election, with the faction now growing significantly, currently comprising 152 members of parliament, up from 76 previously.
However, the final number of members may still be uncertain, as the inclusion of Matthias Helferich and Maximilian Krah in the faction remains unclear. Helferich was not part of the faction in the previous legislative period due to controversial statements and Krah was previously a member of the European Parliament, where he was not accepted into the AfD-led ESN faction due to several scandals.
