Weber’s Comeback: CDU’s Top Support Puts Him in Pole Position for EU’s Top Job

The CDU leadership has expressed support for CSU politician Manfred Weber in his candidacy for a second term as the head of the European People’s Party (EVP). According to a report by Politico, citing party circles, the vote at the Bundesvorstand meeting on Sunday was “unanimous”. The CSU had already nominated Weber.

The leadership of the EVP is set to be re-elected at a congress in Valencia at the end of April. So far, Weber has not faced an opponent in the race. Weber has led the European People’s Party since 2022. The CDU also nominated David McAllister, the former Minister-President of Lower Saxony, for another term as EVP Vice-President on Sunday.
