German Transport Minister Criticizes Deutsche Bahn’s Decision to Abolish Family Reservations

The head of the Social Democratic Party’s parliamentary group, Matthias Miersch, has called on Deutsche Bahn to reconsider its plan to eliminate family reservations on its trains. Miersch expressed his concerns in an interview with the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, stating that the company’s decision would make train travel unaffordable for many families.

The German railway operator announced last Tuesday that it would be scrapping the family reservation system, effective from this Sunday. Despite the backlash, Deutsche Bahn remains committed to the plan, which is expected to significantly increase the cost of train travel for families. The new system would charge 22 euros for a family of three in second-class, a significant increase from the current 10.40 euros for a family reservation. This would double to 44 euros for a round-trip journey.
