German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul Emphasizes European Unity and Actionability Ahead of Spain and Portugal Visits
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, of the Christian Democratic Union, highlighted the significance of unity and actionability in Europe prior to his departure for Spain and Portugal. In the face of profound global upheavals and crises, Europe is confronted with challenges, he stated. The support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression demonstrates the importance of unity, he added.
Wadephul emphasized that Europe, as the “space of freedom and democracy” will be strong if its member states can rely on one another. No single European country can alone overcome the massive challenges it faces, he said. Germany, along with Spain and Portugal, shares the conviction of increasing defense efforts.
During his meetings in Madrid and Lisbon, Wadephul will discuss with his counterparts how Europe can make its voice heard in the world. Spain and Portugal, he noted, play a key role in this endeavor, not only due to the spread of the Spanish and Portuguese languages, but also culturally and politically.
In Madrid, Wadephul will meet with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, before traveling to Lisbon in the afternoon to hold talks with his Portuguese counterpart, Paulo Rangel.
