Wadephul Demands Greater Safety For Aid Workers

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for unimpeded access for humanitarian workers to populations in need around the globe. Addressing the critical risks faced by aid personnel, Wadephul stated that over 600 have lost their lives in the last two years while delivering essential assistance.

The Minister emphasized the crucial role humanitarian aid plays in fostering security and stability, ultimately paving the way for peaceful resolutions. “Humanitarian engagement remains indispensable in a world rife with crises and conflicts” he affirmed. Germany, he stated, acknowledges its responsibility and remains a dependable partner in global emergency relief as one of the world’s leading donor nations. “We provide assistance during acute crises and we do not forget those who do not make daily headlines” he added.

Vulnerable populations – including children, the elderly and the injured – are disproportionately affected during times of crisis and conflict, often facing immediate food insecurity. Wadephul highlighted Germany’s ongoing efforts in several key regions, including Sudan where hunger relief is a priority, Myanmar following the devastating earthquake and Ukraine where support is being provided to families displaced by war and destruction. He also drew attention to the critical situation in Gaza, where Germany is advocating for access to those in dire need.

Germany has allocated over 335 million Euros in aid to the population of Gaza since 2023. The Minister stressed that this level of support would not be possible without the dedication and bravery of humanitarian workers. He concluded by extending heartfelt gratitude to all those who risk their lives to help others, marking the annual World Humanitarian Day.
