Von der Leyen Calls for Renewed Europe

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged EU member states to bolster the European Union’s standing in a rapidly shifting global landscape. Addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, von der Leyen outlined a vision for a stronger, more independent EU, emphasizing the need to secure its place in a world increasingly characterized by power struggles.

Von der Leyen highlighted a perceived rise in geopolitical tensions and what she described as “imperial ambitions and imperial wars”. According to the Commission President, several major global powers have either adopted a neutral stance towards Europe or demonstrate openly hostile sentiments.

In response to these challenges, von der Leyen called for a “new Europe” advocating for a moment of independence. She underscored the EU’s mission should encompass the ability to ensure its own defense and security, as well as the mastery of technologies and energies that drive its economies.

“Ultimately, it is about having the freedom and power to determine our own destiny” von der Leyen stated, expressing confidence in the EU’s ability to achieve this. She called for enhanced unity among member states, European institutions and pro-European, democratic forces within the parliament, highlighting cohesion as a cornerstone of the EU’s future strength.
