‘Voluntariness is the Future’

'Voluntariness is the Future'

A senior official from the Social Democratic Party of Germany, Tim Klüssendorf, has expressed his categorical opposition to the introduction of a military draft during the current legislative period. In an interview with Bild am Sonntag, he emphasized the importance of a system based on voluntary service, stating that he is uncertain about the feasibility of a mandatory draft and would reject it even if it were possible to pass it.

Klüssendorf believes that the proposed voluntary commitment should first be tested and evaluated, allowing four years to establish the system and assess its outcomes. He views the voluntary approach as a more effective way to promote individual self-determination, citing the advantages of this model over a compulsory draft, which he believes would limit people’s autonomy.
