Volkswagen is poised to revert to traditional model naming conventions for its forthcoming electric vehicles, according to reports The company’s next generation compact electric car will be known as the IDPolo, with a corresponding SUV variant to be designated the IDCross
The shift marks a departure from the numerical naming strategy currently employed – ID3 to ID7 – which the manufacturer intends to phase out over the coming years The updated version of the ID3, scheduled for release in 2026, will be the final iteration to bear the numerical title before being superseded by the IDGolf
Furthermore, Volkswagen plans to rename the ID4 as the IDTiguan following a planned redesign next year
Volkswagen’s brand CEO, Thomas Schäfer, is expected to unveil the IDGolf and IDCross, alongside related models from sister brands Škoda – the Epiq – and Cupra – the Raval – this Sunday, immediately prior to the opening of the IAA Mobility automotive show in Munich The move signals a strategic realignment within the Volkswagen group, potentially aiming to leverage established brand recognition with the transition to electric mobility
