VdK President Sounds Alarm as Germany's Affordable Housing Dwindles to a Critical Low

In a recent interview with the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”, the President of the Social Union VdK, Verena Bentele, emphasized the importance of strengthening the social housing sector and criticized the lack of attention to the issue of housing in the election programs of the parties. “Housing is the social question of our time” she said, pointing out that the topic is hardly mentioned in the party manifestos. According to Bentele, the social housing construction is a crucial element in creating affordable living space and a new government must therefore push the promotion forward. She referred to the demographic change, stating that “especially the growing number of older people will rely on social housing.”

Bentele also stressed the importance of making social housing barrier-free, as it is cost-effective and benefits everyone, from families with strollers to elderly people with walkers and wheelchair users.
