The US administration has issued a decree reclassifying the Huthi movement as a foreign terrorist organization, reversing a 2021 decision by the previous administration to remove the designation. The move comes as the Huthis have been accused of launching multiple attacks on civilian infrastructure, including several on civil airports in Saudi Arabia and have fired over 300 rockets at Israel since October 2023.
According to the decree, the Huthi movement, which is backed by Iran, has been responsible for numerous attacks on civilian infrastructure, including multiple strikes on civil airports in Saudi Arabia. The US administration has also accused the group of firing over 300 rockets at Israel since October 2023.
The Huthi movement, which is part of the “Axis of Resistance”led by Iran, has been involved in a series of attacks on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since the start of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. The group has claimed these attacks are in solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The reclassification of the Huthi movement as a foreign terrorist organization may take several weeks to take effect. The group was previously listed as a “specially designated global terrorist group”(SDTG), a designation that allowed for humanitarian aid to still be delivered to the conflict-ridden country.
