Concerns are mounting regarding the potential for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Europe, voiced by CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn. Following recent engagements with U.S. government officials, Spahn expressed reservations about the reliability of continued American military presence on the continent.
“There is no guarantee they will stay” Spahn stated in an interview with “Stern” magazine. He emphasized the potential for abrupt changes in U.S. planning and suggested a lack of awareness regarding this possibility within Europe.
Spahn reiterated his call for a re-evaluation of nuclear deterrence mechanisms within Europe, stressing the need to secure American safeguards for Germany while simultaneously exploring alternative frameworks for European nuclear participation. He highlighted conversations with U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Stephen A. Feinberg, who reportedly indicated a shift in U.S. focus towards China, potentially impacting commitments elsewhere.
The CDU politician also defended U.S. President Donald Trump against accusations of fascism. He cautioned against hasty labels, asserting that the United States operates as a nation governed by rule of law and established institutions, despite acknowledging instances of challenging presidential behavior. He noted the President’s consistent stance against regimes deemed to be oppressive, such as that of Iran’s ruling clergy.
