US Trip: No Special Prep for Merkel's White House Visit?

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Prepare for Upcoming US Visit

Berlin, Germany – In anticipation of his upcoming visit to the White House, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will prepare in a similar manner to his other foreign trips, according to his government spokesperson, Stefan Kornelius.

Kornelius, speaking in Berlin on Monday, stated that the Chancellor is constantly in touch with European partners, discussing issues such as the integration of the US in European security and economic matters. He also mentioned that the Chancellor has a cordial relationship with US President Donald Trump, having established a connection through phone calls and text messages. The two leaders will meet on Thursday and the Chancellor will be well-prepared for the encounter.

When asked if the Chancellor, like British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who received an invitation from King Charles for a state visit in February, has an ace up his sleeve, Kornelius remained tight-lipped. He noted that most gifts are typically wrapped and only unwrapped upon arrival, adding that the Chancellor will reiterate an existing invitation to the US President in Washington.
