Christoph Heusgen, the former German UN Ambassador and Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, expressed surprise that the US and President Donald Trump are willing to make concessions for a ceasefire in the Ukraine war before even holding talks with Russia.
“For a dealmaker, it’s astonishing that he’s already giving up positions before negotiations, which might have similar outcomes” Heusgen told the Spiegel. He emphasized that “it’s crucial that, if there are to be negotiations, Ukraine is at the table.” Heusgen added, “Nothing can be negotiated without the Ukrainians, who are the victims of Russian aggression.”
The Munich Security Conference, now in its 61st year, is expected to take place from February 14 to 16, with high-ranking politicians and security experts from around the world in attendance. The focus of the conference is reportedly set to be on the Ukraine war.
