German expert warns of heightened security risks in Germany following US-Iran conflict escalation
According to Roderich Kiesewetter, a German expert on intelligence, the US intervention in the war against Iran has worsened the security situation in Germany. He told the Handelsblatt that the threat of attacks, sabotage and cyberattacks from the Iranian regime and its proxies must be taken seriously. The vice-chair of the Bundestag’s intelligence oversight committee specifically highlighted the potential danger for Jewish and Israeli institutions and individuals in Germany. He also suggested that the US should take similar measures to enhance the security of its own institutions.
Konstantin von Notz, a Green party MP and chair of the Bundestag’s intelligence oversight committee, also expects the conflict to have an impact on Germany’s security landscape. He believes that the protection of Israeli and US institutions in Germany must be adapted in light of the recent events and that the country can expect a heightened level of demonstrations on its streets.
Notz was critical of the police’s decision to disperse a pro-Jewish rally in Berlin over the weekend, citing concerns over the safety of the participants. He described the move as “embarrassing” and emphasized that such an incident should not be repeated.
The consequences of the recent escalation in the Middle East conflict are expected to be a major topic of discussion in the Bundestag’s relevant committees, according to Kiesewetter. He believes that the committees will focus on both external and internal security, as well as scenarios for the Near and Middle East and the threats posed by the Iranian regime within Germany.
Kiesewetter also sees the destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities as a legitimate act of self-defense by Israel and believes that the US and Israel have prevented a nuclear arms race in the region by taking action against the Iranian regime and its nuclear ambitions.
