German prosecutors have filed charges against a U.S. citizen suspected of acting as an agent for Chinese intelligence services. The Federal Prosecutor General’s office announced Monday that the individual is strongly suspected of having offered to engage in intelligence activities on behalf of a foreign intelligence agency in a particularly serious case.
Between 2017 and early 2023, the accused worked for a civilian contractor of the U.S. Department of Defense. From 2020 onwards, he was stationed at a U.S. military base in Germany. Authorities allege that beginning in the summer of 2024, the individual repeatedly contacted Chinese state institutions, offering to transmit sensitive information pertaining to the U.S. military.
The man has been in custody since November 7, 2024, following an arrest warrant issued by an investigative judge at the Federal Court of Justice. The indictment is being pursued before the state security senate of the Higher Regional Court of Koblenz.
