A leading German politician has expressed concern that the recent US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities may worsen the situation for the Iranian population. Jan van Aken, the chairman of the Left Party, believes that the weakened Iranian regime may intensify repression within the country in response to the attack.
Van Aken sharply criticized the US attack, stating that it is not about who has the largest bombs, but about how to prevent the development of an Iranian atomic bomb. He emphasized the need for negotiations, treaties and trust that the agreements will be upheld by all sides to ensure the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
The politician also warned that the sudden and unprovoked military attack undermines the rule of international law, making it impossible to rely on the existing regulations. He called on the German government to work tirelessly to keep the window of opportunity for a diplomatic solution open.
Meanwhile, Irene Mihalic, an expert of the Green Party, has warned of a potential deterioration of the security situation in Germany. She noted that the threat to Jews in Germany is already at a high level and the recent events may further increase the danger. Mihalic urged the German government to consider the security implications of the situation and to react accordingly to the assessments of the police and intelligence agencies, as the full consequences of the events on the domestic security are not yet fully predictable.
