In a strongly worded criticism, SPD foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner has condemned the US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Stegner’s remarks, published in the Rheinische Post, came as a stark contrast to the diplomatic efforts of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who had spoken of encouraging diplomatic talks with Iran just yesterday in Geneva. The US President, Donald Trump, has instead chosen to resort to air strikes against the country, Stegner lamented.
The SPD politician warned that the world has been presented with a worse reality and the crucial question in the coming weeks will be whether it is still possible to prevent a large-scale conflagration in the Middle East or an even more dangerous escalation.
Stegner’s statement also expressed his concern over the failure of diplomacy, the dominance of global rearmament and the triumph of military thinking and action, with war being the continuation of politics by other means, a sentiment that is not a good omen for those who hope for peace.
