Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasizes the significance of the NATO summit in The Hague, despite concessions made to US President Donald Trump.
Tsahkna, in an interview with the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, described the summit as historic, regardless of Trump’s statements or actions. He views the gathering as a strong signal to Russia, emphasizing the direct connection between the increased defense spending in Europe and the growing threat posed by Russia. The summit, he believes, will send a strong message of unity and solidarity, despite Russia’s attempts to divide the alliance through hybrid attacks, disinformation and pressure.
The foreign minister also referenced the strong membership commitments made to Ukraine at the NATO summits in Washington and Vilnius, stating that the future of Ukraine lies within the alliance. He emphasized that the promise of Ukraine’s full NATO membership remains, even if the current summit communique lacks clear language, describing full membership as the strongest security guarantee for the country and for Europe.
