Unity Hubs" on the Horizon?

At the Munich Security Conference, Germany and Ukraine have further advanced plans for the establishment of Ukrainian “Unity Hubs” in the Federal Republic. A corresponding intention agreement was signed on Saturday in the presence of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The activities of the so-called “Unity Hubs” will be focused on the consultation and support of Ukrainians in the event of a possible voluntary return to Ukraine, as well as in the search for work in Ukraine and Germany. Moreover, the “Unity Hubs” will serve as a point of contact for refugees and offer cultural programs, language courses and local orientation classes.

“We support the Ukrainian government in this in this terrible time of war in keeping close contact with refugees in Germany” said German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD). “This is also important so that people can return to their homeland as soon as possible.” The first “Unity Hub” is expected to be opened in Berlin.

According to the German government, around 1.25 million people are currently living in Germany, who have fled the Ukraine war since February 24, 2022. More than 360,000 of them are children and young people under the age of 18. Among the adult refugees, more than 60 percent are women.
