Union's Shocking U-Turn on Committee Chairs

German CDU/CSU Faction Leader Backs AFD for Committee Roles

The parliamentary business manager of the CDU/CSU faction in the German Bundestag, Hendrik Hoppenstedt, has expressed support for the election of AfD politicians to committee chair positions. In an interview with the Bild newspaper, he criticized the decision not to vote for AfD candidates, stating that it is wrong to exclude them from the process.

Hoppenstedt believes that the AfD’s continued popularity among voters means that the traditional parties must adapt their approach. He is willing to work with the SPD to vote against AFD candidates, but argues that this will not address the root of the problem.

According to Hoppenstedt, the decisions made in committees are ultimately determined by the government’s majority. He believes that if committee chairs were to misbehave, the public would take notice and punish the AfD at the polls. The CDU/CSU faction would then swiftly replace them.

The AfD, Hoppenstedt claims, seizes every opportunity to portray itself as a victim. He is willing to take this opportunity away from them, implying that the AfD’s constant victimhood narrative is a ploy to gain sympathy.
