German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has been defended by the opposition from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the debate over the government’s handling of the Israeli administration.
According to Adis Ahmetovic, the foreign policy spokesperson of the SPD parliamentary group, Wadephul has clearly identified where international law is being broken in the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip. Ahmetovic praised Wadephul for showing courage in doing so.
Ahmetovic criticized the Christian Social Union (CSU) for attempting to hinder the governing of its own minister, implying that the CSU is trying to undermine Wadephul’s efforts. The CSU had expressed disapproval of Wadephul’s criticism of Israel, with the party’s state chairman, Alexander Hoffmann, stating that friends can be criticized, but not sanctioned.
