The Union has warned of pre-agreements for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip in the event of a possible end to the war between Israel and Hamas. “A reconstruction under a corrupt, militant Hamas should not find German support” said the foreign policy spokesperson of the Bundestag faction, Jürgen Hardt (CDU), to the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition).
“A return to the status quo, as we have seen numerous times, with a Hamas rule in Gaza, can no one accept. That would mean waiting for the next war” the CDU politician said.
At the end of political negotiations, only the takeover of state power by the Palestinian Authority under President Abbas could stand, Hardt said. “Only then would we be sure that October 7th would never happen again, and Israel at least would have the security that is self-evident for most other states.”
The liberation of the hostages must now take priority, Hardt demanded. “Germany should be prepared to support Israel and Egypt in supplying the population in Gaza with food.
