Union makes slight comeback, AfD loses ground in latest survey

Following the approval of the black-red coalition agreement by all parties involved, the Union can again slightly increase its share in the current ZDF-Political Barometer. According to the survey conducted by the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen, CDU and CSU receive 27 percent (+1). In contrast, the AfD loses a point and comes in at 23 percent. The Greens also give up a point and only come in at 11 percent. The SPD remains at 15 percent, the Left at 10 percent, BSW at 3 percent and FDP at 4 percent, all unchanged. Seven percent would vote for another party (+1).

Despite the slight increase for the Union, the enthusiasm for the new coalition is declining. Only 48 percent would find it good if the new alliance were to materialize. In April, it was still 55 percent. The situation is even worse for the designated Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU): Only slightly more than one-third (38 percent) think he would be a better Chancellor, while 56 percent think he would be a worse Chancellor. The rejection rate is particularly high among supporters of the Left (87 percent), the AfD (85 percent) and BSW (83 percent).

According to the survey, the pressing issue is the economic situation. Forty-five percent believe that the next federal government should primarily focus on the economy, followed by social issues (21 percent). As for asylum (12 percent), defense (10 percent) and climate protection (10 percent), they are significantly lower on the list of priorities.
