The German trade union confederation, DGB, is calling for a summit with Chancellor Friedrich Merz to address the future of the automotive industry. Yasmin Fahimi, Chair of the DGB, emphasized the need for a comprehensive platform involving unions, manufacturers and suppliers to discuss the sector’s trajectory.
Fahimi highlighted a significant level of uncertainty within the industry and among its workforce. She underscored the importance of establishing a clear vision for the future, requiring the alignment of political frameworks, strategic planning, market reflection and the investment decisions of companies.
The DGB Chair cautioned against a decline in Germany’s industrial base, specifically stressing the importance of preserving the automotive sector as a key industry. Fahimi stated that critical, unresolved questions need to be openly addressed, including the pace of electric vehicle charging infrastructure development, the implementation of new electric vehicle subsidies and the planned phase-out date for internal combustion engines in 2035. The proposed summit aims to provide a forum for these crucial discussions.
