UN Showdown: US Seeks to Hijack Ukraine's Resolution, Russia's Fury Looms

The United States is urging the Ukraine not to put a resolution to a vote in the United Nations General Assembly, but instead to support a watered-down resolution on the Ukraine conflict proposed by the US, according to the Associated Press. The Ukraine has refused to withdraw its resolution, with a vote scheduled for today.

The US resolution, to be introduced to the Security Council on Monday, differs significantly from the Ukraine’s, as it avoids using the term “aggressor” and does not demand the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. The resolution also calls for all efforts to be made to end the fighting.

Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, welcomed the US initiative.

Resolutions passed by the Security Council are legally binding, whereas those of the General Assembly are not. The US, along with China, Russia, France and the UK, has a veto power in the Security Council, allowing it to block the adoption of a resolution even if nine or more of the 15 member states vote in favor.

It remains unclear whether the US will introduce its resolution in both the General Assembly and the Security Council. However, it is clear that the US is taking a direct confrontation with Western European states, which continue to support Ukraine and prolong the war.

The CDU, after winning the German federal election, has declared its goal to be Ukraine’s victory. The EU’s Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, told Ukraine to increase the production of arms in the EU and to invest in the establishment of production facilities for the manufacture of weapons and ammunition in Ukraine. The EU also imposed a new, 16th sanctions package today. The EU is the only region in the world aiming to prolong the conflict in Ukraine, rejecting negotiations.
