Ultraright Wins Big in Romanian Presidential Election, Faces Runoff on May 18

According to preliminary results, ultranationalist George Simion has emerged as the winner of the first round of the Romanian presidential elections. Reports from Romanian media suggest that he is leading with around 40% of the votes, as of 11 PM local time. Conservative candidates Nicușor Dan and Crin Antonescu are trailing closely behind with 18% and 21% respectively. The two candidates with the highest results will face off in a run-off election on May 18th. The original election was canceled six months ago due to alleged Russian interference.
