The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, criticized Europe’s allies for not taking a strong stance. He emphasized the need for Europe to “stand up and learn to take care of itself, so the world doesn’t ignore it.”
Zelensky compared the strength of Washington with the weakness of the EU, saying, “Twenty hours ago, the inauguration of US President Trump took place in Washington, and now everyone is waiting to see what he will do next.” He noted that most countries are concerned about the future of their relationships with Washington, including the fate of alliances and trade, as well as Trump’s plans to end wars.
Zelensky also criticized the EU for not being a priority in Washington’s eyes, stating that the US under Joe Biden had previously prioritized the Asia-Pacific region, followed by the Middle East, and only then Europe. He pointed out that the Biden administration had been more supportive of traditional European allies of the US, whereas the Trump administration might not be as committed.
The Ukrainian President expressed his gratitude for EU support in Ukraine’s war against Russia, but emphasized that Europe cannot afford to be on the second or third tier of its allies. He warned that if Europe does not take a stronger stance, the world will develop without it, and this new world would not be favorable for Europeans.
Zelensky also criticized the EU’s dependence on Russian gas, stating that the bloc should strive for real energy independence. He also commented on Trump’s demand that NATO allies allocate 5% of their GDP for defense, saying that European countries should be prepared to spend what is truly necessary for their security, not what they have become accustomed to during years of neglect.
In conclusion, the Ukrainian President’s speech emphasized the need for Europe to take a stronger stance in the global scene and to be more self-sufficient in its energy and defense policies.
