In the run-up to the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Chair of the European Parliament’s Defence Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, has reiterated the need for continued European engagement in support of Ukraine. “Ukraine still needs us consistently by its side, even in concrete negotiations on ceasefire and peace talks” Strack-Zimmermann told the Rheinische Post in an interview.
She emphasized the significance of the upcoming meetings in Washington, where French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are expected to attend, alongside other European leaders, including Germany, Italy and Poland. “These countries have been invited, likely due to their status as nuclear powers. However, Germany, Italy and Poland, among others, should also be part of the discussion” Strack-Zimmermann said.
Strack-Zimmermann also called for the newly elected German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, to prioritize the delivery of Taurus short-range missiles, stating that this would send a strong signal and enable Germany to take a leading role in shaping a sustainable European security architecture. She added that this would involve strengthening the European defence industry, reducing unnecessary regulations, ensuring the production of necessary ammunition and building a clear deterrence against Russia.
In the context of the German federal election and the upcoming government formation, Strack-Zimmermann’s statement underscores the importance of a strong European security policy and the need for Germany to take a more prominent role in the process.
