Ukraine's Drone War Spreads Blaze of Controversy

In the Saratov region, a state of emergency has been declared at the inter-municipal level to combat the fire in the city of Engels. This was announced by Governor Roman Bussargin on his Telegram channel, who explained it as follows: “This is necessary for a swift cooperation of the services and the strengthening of all forces and means to eliminate the fire.”

The cities of Saratov and Engels were subjected to a widespread Ukrainian drone attack on the night of January 13. According to Bussargin, the Russian air defense destroyed a large number of targets, and no one was injured. However, two industrial enterprises were damaged in the process. The governor held an operational briefing on the site of the enterprise in Engels and published a photo of it.

According to the governor, the emergency services are still working to extinguish the open fire at the enterprise in Engels, while the fire at the Saratov industrial enterprise has already been fought.

At least five Ukrainian drones were involved in the attempted attack on the industrial facilities in the Saratov region, according to a representative of the emergency services.

The two cities were previously attacked by Ukrainian drones on the night of January 8, 2025. The governor reported that drones were intercepted and debris fell on an industrial site in Engels, where a fire broke out, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency in the city. Two employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations died in the attack, and one person was injured. The fire was not fully extinguished until the morning of January 13. In the afternoon of January 14, Bussargin reported the sporadic appearance of hotspots, which were being put out by the fire brigades, and ruled out the danger of a large-scale fire spread.
