Ukraine War Likely To Drag On Says Rheinmetall Chief

The CEO of Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger, expressed skepticism regarding a swift resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, particularly in light of the anticipated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking to RTL and ntv on Thursday, Papperger stated his hope for an end to the war, but acknowledged a pessimistic outlook.

Papperger emphasized the critical importance of including Ukraine in all decision-making processes, especially regarding its territorial future. He asserted that a lasting solution would be unattainable without the explicit consent of the Ukrainian government. “I do not believe a solution will be reached within the next twelve months” he stated, citing the unlikelihood of Ukraine accepting Russian demands, including foregoing NATO membership and substantial concessions. “The Ukrainians will continue to fight as they have been and they will not accept this” he added.

When questioned about President Putin’s willingness to pursue peace, Papperger expressed doubt. “At the moment, I unfortunately doubt that” he said. Consequently, he indicated a continuing high demand for defense materials, necessitating a build-up of production capacity within the industry. Rheinmetall is currently engaged in negotiations with the German government regarding long-term programs concerning vehicles, drones and ammunition.
