Ukraine U-Turn: German Parties in Chaos as AfD Rides the Wave of Approval

Several German politicians have welcomed the initiation of talks between the US and Russia to resolve the Ukraine conflict. After the Trump phone call, several state politicians praised the US administration’s approach, calling it a new, pragmatic approach to diplomacy.

The AfD’s Nikolaus Kramer wrote on Facebook, “Donald Trump is now doing what the AfD has been demanding for a long time: real diplomacy instead of endless arms deliveries.” Kramer believes a new paradigm is emerging, based on pragmatic realism, which the AfD has long represented.

Birgit Bessin, a Brandenburg state politician, also commented on the talks, saying that the claim that Russia was not willing to negotiate had been proven false. The AfD, she said, had been right all along in stating that the Ukraine war was primarily a proxy conflict between the US and Russia.

Matthias Moosdorf, the AfD’s foreign policy spokesman, expressed his personal hope for a diplomatic solution, saying, “I am optimistic that we can now achieve a diplomatic solution after three years of death and destruction.”

The BSW’s Sevim Dağdelen, the party’s foreign policy spokeswoman, also welcomed the development, saying that it had become clear that the Ukraine conflict was a proxy war between the US and Russia. She warned, however, against a ceasefire in the conflict, which could be used to rearm the Ukrainian side against Russia.
