Ukraine Talks Stalled No Real Progress

The current diplomatic efforts surrounding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine are falling short of establishing a genuine negotiation process, according to German Social Democratic Party (SPD) foreign policy spokesperson Adis Ahmetovic. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Ahmetovic characterized the existing engagements as a “ping-pong” dynamic, revealing a complex web of discussions between the United States and Russia and between the US and Ukraine, with Germany consulted subsequently. He asserted this multi-layered approach does not constitute a sufficient foundation for lasting resolution.

Ahmetovic emphasized the critical imperative for European involvement in any potential peace talks. “When it comes to discussing and negotiating an end to a war in Europe, that cannot happen without Europeans” he stated, underscoring the continent’s vital stake in the outcome. His remarks carried a pointed rebuke of external pressures, explicitly rejecting the notion that European nations should have terms dictated to them.

He directly challenged the influence of both Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump, signaling a broader concern about the direction and inclusivity of the negotiation landscape. By denying the legitimacy of externally imposed agendas, Ahmetovic is subtly arguing for a re-evaluation of current power dynamics and a stronger, more independent role for Europe in shaping the terms of a ceasefire and long-term peace. The implication is that relying solely on US-mediated talks, while tactically necessary, risks marginalizing European perspectives and undermining the sustainability of any agreement reached.
