Ukraine Talks Leave Key Figure Unconvinced

A leading German parliamentarian has expressed cautious assessment of the recent Ukraine summit held in Washington, suggesting limited substantive progress was achieved. Omid Nouripour, Vice President of the German Bundestag and a prominent figure within the Green Party, cautioned against overstating the outcomes of the meeting.

While acknowledging the importance of continued dialogue and reaffirmation of support for Ukraine, Nouripour voiced skepticism regarding potential future negotiations, particularly a proposed trilateral meeting involving Presidents Putin, Zelenskyy and Trump. He argues the current preconditions set by Russia for any such talks are unacceptable and would ultimately undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Nouripour highlighted concerns that Russia could easily leverage such a meeting to its advantage, potentially leading to its collapse. He emphasized that the conditions currently demanded by President Putin regarding ceasefires and other aspects are incompatible with a viable resolution.

Furthermore, the parliamentarian expressed disapproval of the temporary exclusion of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen from the Washington summit. He underscored that von der Leyen represents over 400 million citizens and serves as the voice of key European nations – including Poland, the Baltic states, the Czech Republic and Romania – whose contributions are critical to the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

Nouripour indicated that the decision reflects a prioritization of accommodating the preferences of the U.S. President over the advancement of distinctly European and national interests.
