German politician Siemtje Möller, a deputy of the Social Democratic Party’s (SPD) faction, has expressed cautious optimism after the second round of talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul.
While welcoming the fact that the two parties are engaging in diplomatic discussions, Möller emphasized that the ongoing war remains a significant challenge. “Every diplomatic conversation is a small step in the right direction, especially in the midst of the war” she said in an interview with the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.
Möller also emphasized the importance of a potential prisoner exchange, describing it as a significant humanitarian signal. However, she stressed that the recent developments do not alter the overall situation, as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions continue to indicate a lack of interest in a ceasefire or meaningful peace negotiations.
The war, Möller noted, continues with relentless attacks on civilian infrastructure. In response, the politician called for continued pressure on Putin and the preparation of additional sanctions in coordination with international partners.
The Ukraine, Möller emphasized, is defending its sovereignty and the common European peace order and deserves the full support of the international community, including military, financial and political backing.
