Security expert Nico Lange has voiced critical perspectives on current discussions surrounding security guarantees for Ukraine, coinciding with a summit in Washington focused on the nation’s future. Lange contends that the notion of requiring Russian approval for such guarantees is fundamentally flawed.
“To suggest we need Russia’s consent to provide security assurances to Ukraine is illogical” Lange stated in interviews with the Mediengruppe Bayern newspapers. “We don’t seek Russian permission regarding the equipment and modernization of our own armed forces for our own protection. The threat facing us and the threat facing Ukraine, originates from the same source: the expansionist and aggressive policies of Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
Lange also addressed the debate surrounding the potential deployment of ground troops, arguing that the terminology itself is misleading. He clarified that discussions are not centered on sending soldiers to the front lines. “The phrase ‘ground troops’ sounds aggressive and evokes fear. The conversation is actually centered around the potential structure of a European military presence within Ukraine “after” a ceasefire agreement” he explained.
He suggested such a presence could involve deploying assets deeper within Ukrainian territory, potentially including fighter aircraft to bolster the country’s air defense capabilities.
Lange emphasized Germany’s responsibility to participate in any such European force, asserting that, given its size and influence, it should contribute to a long-term security solution for the region. “If a European military presence is established in Ukraine to ensure lasting peace, I fail to see why Germany would abstain from participation” he stated. “If a geopolitical turning point has indeed occurred, we must approach these questions with a renewed perspective”.
