Ukraine Group Slams Soders Benefit Cut Proposal

The head of the Allianz Ukrainischer Organisationen, Oleksandra Bienert, has strongly criticized a recent proposal by Markus Söder, chairman of the CSU party, advocating for Ukrainian refugees in Germany to receive benefits under the Asylum Seekers’ Benefits Act rather than citizen’s allowance (Bürgergeld).

Bienert argued that such a measure would not resolve existing challenges but rather create new obstacles. “Removing citizen’s allowance for Ukrainian refugees doesn’t solve a problem; it generates new ones” she stated in an interview with the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland. She emphasized that successful integration is achieved through inclusion, not deterrence.

She elaborated that many Ukrainian refugees possess valuable qualifications and demonstrate a willingness and motivation to work. However, they face considerable structural barriers including protracted recognition procedures, limited or overcrowded language courses, inadequate childcare options and overburdened job centers. Bienert asserted that these factors are the primary drivers of delays in entering the workforce, not the level of social assistance provided.

Bienert refuted the notion that access to citizen’s allowance is incompatible with employment, highlighting its role in facilitating targeted support. She explained that through job centers, it enables consultations, training and job placement services, all crucial components for successful integration.
