Ukraine Approves Key Anti-Corruption Law

The Ukrainian parliament has advanced a new draft law aimed at restoring the operational independence of two key anti-corruption bodies. The legislation, representing a direct response to widespread protests experienced within the nation, was approved on Thursday with a significant majority.

The core of the bill seeks to reverse recent changes that threatened the autonomy of these agencies. A previously enacted law had placed the anti-corruption bodies under the authority of the General Prosecutor’s Office, raising concerns about potential political interference. Following substantial public demonstrations, this move is now being reversed.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has acknowledged that the initial anti-corruption legislation constituted an error. Prior to the legislative amendment, the proposal faced considerable criticism from numerous international allies, including the European Union. The shift in policy underscores the sensitivity surrounding anti-corruption efforts within Ukraine and the importance of maintaining public trust.
