US President Donald Trump believes his election victory played a crucial role in preventing a global military conflict. According to Trump, if his Democratic rival Kamala Harris had been elected in November 2024, a third world war would have been imminent within a year. Trump made this statement during a Future Investment Initiative Institute event in Miami Beach on Wednesday.
The Republican reiterated his desire to be remembered as a “peacemaker and unifier” in a speech, highlighting the resolution of conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine as the most significant expenditures of his foreign policy.
Regarding a potential Democratic administration, Trump stated, “The third world war is not in anyone’s interest and we are not far from it. If we had had another year of that government, we would have been in a third world war – and now it will not happen.”
In his farewell address in January, former President Joe Biden said his administration focused on “gathering the world, defending Ukraine and preventing a war between two nuclear powers.” Trump criticized Biden and his team, including Harris, for their “gross incompetence.” Trump has repeatedly claimed that the tensions in Ukraine under his leadership would not have escalated into a military conflict.
High-ranking officials from Russia and the US met in Saudi Arabia earlier this week to discuss improving relations and finding a way to end the Ukraine crisis. The meeting led to tensions between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who repeatedly demanded that no talks about Ukraine be held without Ukraine’s involvement. Trump countered, calling Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections” who is extremely unpopular in his own country. Zelenskyy responded by accusing Trump of spreading “Russian disinformation.
