Trump's Cut: Hollywood's Hush on Free Speech

American film director Todd Haynes is concerned about the state of film production in the US under the new presidency of Donald Trump. “How we’re going to navigate all of this, how we can counter all of this, how we can manage to not let ourselves be crushed and whether we can succeed in capturing the current mood in the US on the big screen, these are the big questions for us now” he said in an interview with German weekly newspaper Die Zeit.

Haynes is the jury president of the 75th Berlinale, which takes place from February 13 to 23. He is known for his films featuring striking female characters, such as the romantic drama “Carol” (2015) starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, or “May December” (2023) with Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman.

Talking about his favorite actress, Julianne Moore, Haynes expressed his hope to work with her for eternity: “I hope we can work together forever.” He also revealed himself as a great admirer of 81-year-old actress Hanna Schygulla, who is represented in the festival’s competition with a film: “Just the possibility of running into her on the way makes me nervous.
