German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU has welcomed the announced arms deal between the United States and NATO for Ukraine.
“President Trump has initiated a significant undertaking today: the United States will provide substantial weaponry to Ukraine, contingent upon financial contributions from European partners” Merz stated on Monday evening.
He confirmed that he had engaged in multiple discussions with the US President in recent days regarding the arrangement. “I assured him that Germany will participate decisively” the Chancellor added.
Merz emphasized the deal as being in the Republic’s own interest. “This will assist Ukraine in defending itself against Russia’s bombing campaign. Only then will the pressure on Moscow increase sufficiently to finally negotiate a peace agreement. Ultimately, it demonstrates that we, as security policy partners, are pulling in the same direction.
He concluded by announcing that rapid clarification of the deal’s specifics is forthcoming. “We are in contact with our partners to resolve the details promptly”.
