German Green Party Official Criticizes US Withdrawal from Paris Climate Agreement
Julia Verlinden, the deputy chair of the German Green Party in the Bundestag, has sharply criticized US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement. Verlinden told the Funke Media Group (Wednesday editions) that Trump’s move “disrespects the victims of devastating wildfires in California and other climate-related natural disasters worldwide.”
In response to the US withdrawal, Verlinden called for Europe to take a more consistent and self-assured approach to climate protection. “We will continue to develop leading roles in climate technologies alongside our European partners” she said.
Germany, Verlinden emphasized, will continue to prioritize the development of clean energy from the sun and wind, accelerating the process even further. She cited the country’s recent success in solar and wind energy installations as a visible achievement of the Green Party’s energy policy over the past three years.
Verlinden also accused the CDU and CSU of not yet understanding the significance of transitioning to a climate-neutral economy, citing the criticism of CDU leader and Union’s chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz of the aesthetics of wind turbines and the success prospects of green steel. “They are harming the future of Germany and Europe” Verlinden said in a statement to the Funke Zeitungen.
