Washington, D.C. – In a move seen as a retaliatory measure, US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he will impose a 25% tariff on imports from Colombia, following the country’s refusal to accept two deportation flights from the United States. The tariff is set to increase to 50% in a week, according to the President.
Additionally, Trump plans to impose a travel ban and “immediate visa revocations for Colombian government officials, their allies and supporters”as well as visa sanctions for “all party members, family members and supporters of the Colombian government.”The President also aims to target “all members of the Colombian government, their families and supporters”with visa sanctions.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro had earlier stated that his country would not allow the deportation flights, describing the US actions as treating Colombian migrants “like criminals.”Trump, in turn, condemned Colombia’s stance as a threat to the national and public security of the United States and accused the country of violating international obligations.
