During a post-meeting press appearance, both leaders expressed optimism, yet remained conspicuously vague about any specific agreements reached. No questions from journalists were permitted.
In an unusual move, President Putin was granted the floor first. He characterized the relationship between the two nations as one of good neighborliness and praised President Trump’s willingness to consider historical context. He described the situation in Ukraine as a “tragedy” emphasizing the shared history between Russia and Ukraine. President Putin stated that Russia and the United States had reached an “agreement” but refrained from elaborating on its contents.
President Trump subsequently acknowledged finding common ground with President Putin on numerous issues, but indicated that a “significant goal” remained elusive. This suggests that a firm commitment to a ceasefire in Ukraine had not yet been secured. The US President stated he would immediately contact Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO, urging Zelenskyy to support what he characterized as “excellent groundwork” laid during the meeting.
